From the Introduction:
Dear Visionary Leaders who Create and Innovate the Society
I suspect many readers may be surprised by the use of shishi, a somewhat old-fashioned Japanese term for leaders, in the title Sozo to Henkaku no Shishi-tachi e (Dear Visionary Leaders who Create and Innovate the Society). I have been strongly drawn to this phrase, which came out during a brainstorming session with my peers, and have since decided to adopt it as the bedrock educational philosophy of GLOBIS.
In these times of upheaval, GLOBIS aspires to nurture “Leaders who Create and Innovate the Society,” to turn out men and women with the resolve to break through the sense of stagnation that has permeated Japan.
Shoin Yoshida, who guided many such leaders toward the end of the Edo period, defined shishi as one who “possesses powerful resolve and unwavering principles.”
A shishi has grand ideals and maintains his or her beliefs, principles and opinions with unbending conviction. Once this level of resolve is attained, one no longer needs to depend upon anyone else or on society as a whole. One can confidently stand above the fray, with a broadened perspective of heaven and earth, past and present.
It is my hope to nurture shishi at the Graduate School of Management, Globis University.
I believe the GLOBIS mission is to advance, one devoted step at a time, every day, to establish a quality school, ultimately leading to the creation of a social environment in which people can live in happiness and fulfillment.
